3 Ways Personality Tests Improve How We Do Business

Several years ago at church, I was introduced to the concept of understanding how to interact with different personality styles. At that time my husband Eddie and I had teenagers so you can imagine how critical understanding them was!

You see, all three of our children are SO very different (I guess that shouldn’t be a big surprise because Eddie and I are polar opposites.) and I knew that understanding their personality traits would be valuable information as they got older.

Since that time, Eddie has become a certified trainer for “True Colors”, which is a way to distinguish personality styles by through the use of colors. He uses this regularly as he teaches high school students now.

Years ago, we made the decision to start screening potential employees for Krueger & James by using a simple personality test. What we discovered is that understanding the different personality styles made us a MUCH stronger team.

We recently took the personality test again with the current Krueger & James team. Why? Here are just a few of the reasons:

As a leader in our company, I want to know how everyone prefers to be communicated with. I’m an incredibly highly dominate personality (for those of you who know me, I’m sure you’re surprised!), but my team is full of every type of personality.

That means that the way they NEED me to communicate with them is very different that how I normally would. Just doing it my way won’t get the job done! I have to temper myself and relate to them. I need to understand who they are, how they think, and how I can adjust my style to help them reach their potential.

2. It Makes Us a Stronger Team

As a team, we need to know how each of us sees the world. Our team has highly dominate personalities, several who have very high interactive people skills, others that are highly process/compliance focused, and we have several wonderfully patient personalities.

We all work well together, but truly understanding our individual styles makes that so much easier.

3. It Helps Us Become More Client Focused

PersonalityStyle2We are a very busy office. Our phones ring constantly and we have thousands of clients. Guess what? All of these phone calls and clients are different, so if we learn to understand the “clues”  as we LISTEN to our clients, we know how they want US to communicate with them.

It’s not hocus-pocus. It’s about using the Golden Rule, but instead of treating others as we want to be treated, we learn to treat others as THEY want to be treated. Pretty cool, right?

This information helps us anticipate how each of us will react when the pressure is on. Since some days at our office or in our daily lives are stressful, it’s good to know how you react and how that might come across to someone else.

It’s also very helpful to be able to anticipate how stress pushes some people over the edge. We know it’s more a byproduct of who they are and knowing that helps all of us be more understanding and supportive.

I wish I could say that I’m really adept at this skill, but hey, I’m learning too. And we aren’t done. We will continue to revisit this training in our office.

And the next time you stop by, you’ll see our charts on the walls. Just glancing at them you’ll see how different we all are, but what an amazing team we make when we work together!
