Lightning stretches across the sky, the thunder echoes through the air and the rain sounds like rocks are falling from the sky as it lands. Yes, it’s that time of year again. For homeowners it brings on one of our biggest fears: hail damage to our roofs.
We’ve already seen some severe weather this year and I’m sure we have many more storms heading our way in the weeks to come. So what do you do if you suspect you have hail damage from a recent storm? Here are some tips:
If you get a knock at the door and on the other side is a guy going door-to-door trying to get on your roof to check for damage, tell them NO THANK YOU!
These roofers are most likely from storm-chasing companies. They migrate to areas hit by recent severe weather. They are in town to drum up as much business as possible….and then they split. Stick with local and reputable roofing companies.
If you think you have damage to your roof, DON’T call your insurance company.
When you make that call to your insurance agent or insurance company and request an adjuster to check your roof for damages, a claim is filed on your homeowners policy. Once a claim has been filed, it’s on your record and, depending on your insurance carrier, could be there for 3 to 5 years. These can also affect your insurance rates.
That claim is on your record even if the adjuster declares you have no damage and even if no money is paid out on the claim.
This could also affect your insurance rates. We always suggest having a roofer inspect for damages before calling the carrier to report a claim. We insure several roofing companies that we can refer to you if you suspect you have some damages.
Maybe you’re in a neighborhood where everyone else is getting a roof replaced but you’ve been told you don’t have any damage?
Storms and weather can be very unpredictable, even if the meteorologists think they have it figured out. It could be possible that your house wasn’t damaged by the storm. However, if you feel confident that you have damage, get some estimates from a few roofing companies and then share them with the claims adjuster.
Also be sure to let your agent know of your concerns. If they’re aware of the situation maybe they can help move things along. All of us here at Krueger & James always do whatever it takes to help our clients…providing peace of mind for whatever life may throw your way!
If you ever have any questions or concerns about potential roof damage or need a referral to a good company, just let us know.
Most importantly, stay safe during the severe weather season!
